Using ANPR to Deter Fly-Tipping and Secure Remote Sites
Case Study: Crook Hill Wind Farm - ANPR-Enabled CCTV
Crook Hill Wind Farm, a 37.4MW site operated by Partnerships for Renewables, faced persistent fly-tipping and opportunist theft due to its remote and open location. With no fixed power, columns or communication infrastructure, a traditional CCTV solution was not feasible.
To secure the site entrance, WCCTV deployed a solar-powered redeployable CCTV camera equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). This allowed on-site security teams to log every vehicle entering or exiting the area and monitor activity in real time.
The system was mounted on a 6m tilt-down column with solar power and a long-life battery capable of running for up to 15 days without sunlight. Its fully autonomous operation made it ideal for off-grid surveillance.
Within the first week of installation, the camera recorded a fly-tipping incident involving concrete water. The ANPR footage led to a successful prosecution against the organisation responsible.
Following this success, Crook Hill extended its service contract to three years and is now considering further deployments across the site.
